Hilary and I met the first time just a few weeks after she adopted one year old Sam. Within two weeks of meeting each other, I headed down to Seattle to get four week old Mordecai. Our adoption journeys began at almost exactly the same time.
Sam’s party was set in motion when he gave my sons a handwritten note that said, in part: You’re invited to my Mario Party July 16th. Join me for 11 1/2 hours of fun!
Since Hilary hadn’t mentioned it, I was pretty sure she wasn’t aware of the invitation…and I was pretty sure July 16th was Sam’s birthday. Sure enough, Sam hadn’t mentioned the party to his mom (Asperger’s can sometimes make you lose track of details like that).
Since Sam had never had a birthday party with friends (just family) Hilary wisely decided that he was probably ready for “friends party”.
Enter the Baker’s Dozen Boys…otherwise known as Rent-a-Party…
Sam did his part with adorable decorations (notice three of those are labeled “Hezzy” “Tucker” and “Mordecai”.
And Hilary came through with her attention-to-detail-awesomeness…
The kids ate pizza, Mario themed snacks and played Mario Cart and Mario Party.
In my boys’ mind, there was only one appropriate gift for such a party (and such a boy).

And so they managed to talk Chuck into letting them give Sam the sewer pipe that’s been floating around our place (unused and leftover from a job).
And I’m pretty sure Sam was the happiest ten year old boy in Washington.
