Birth Photography and Doulas

121512_8370 bw blog

Adalia got the call on Friday afternoon…she is now a certified doula with PALS! I am so proud of her. She has worked hard for this, beginning with her doula training at Bastyr University back in 2010  to attending births and everything in between. The very next day, Saturday,  she was doula at the birth of sweet little Jameson.

{And because there is confusion every time I mention the word “doula” on my blog, let me make it clear: a doula offers physical and emotional support to a woman during and after labor. Doulas provide no medical care or advice. Here is the definition as given by PALS.}

I too was present at Jameson’s birth as photographer. Julie is a good friend of mine and the photographer who took the beautiful photo you see at the top of my blog!

You really, really must go check out the birth of Jameson over at Little Earthling Photography. I got the most amazing shots of him being born. It is all G-rated, I assure you, but oh so cool.

Josanna {Bellingham Newborn Photographer}

I had the pleasure of photographing sweet Josanna and her three big brothers yesterday. It just so happens that Josanna’s five-year-old brother Brady was the first newborn I every photographed.

This is  really embarrassing, but in the interest of keeping it real and encouraging other aspiring photographers out there, here are images of her older brothers.

October, 2007.

Brady, the first newborn I ever photographed. Can you believe his mom let me come back and try on her next baby?

July 2009.

Not a whole lot better. Apparently I was working on posing and ignoring the lighting all together…

February 2011.

Okay…but I think it’s safe to say I’m still working on my craft and growing artistically.

And one more of sweet Josanna, since I don’t want those older images burned in your mind forever.

For even more photos of yesterday’s session, click over to Little Earthling Photography.

And because I get asked this fairly frequently, I’ve never taken a photography class. I’ve read my camera manual and learned how to use the settings, hung out of some great photography forums (ILP taught me the most, by far) and had a great mentor, Emily Weaver Brown.

Sweet Carise {Bellingham Newborn Photographer}

Sweet little Carese was under five pounds when she was born! Long and lean like the rest of her family.

I love her intent look as she gazes up at her mama.

Carese is number 12 in this family…there is no lack of loving arms to hold her in this house!

Welcome, Brenna! {Bellingham Newborn Photographer}

Yesterday afternoon I got to go meet my dears friends’ sweet little baby, Brenna.

I could barely put her down long enough to take pictures. She was just so sweet and snuggly!

Many more photos to follow, I promise. But for now, I have my own sweet little ones to tend.
