It’s a beautiful thing. Oats, nuts, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds. Yummy, nutritious, cheap. What more could you ask for in a breakfast food? My children love this stuff and eat bowl after bowl of it. The recipe below fills two one gallon glass jars.
Mix:
30 cups oats
5 cups coconut (optional)
2 1/2 cups sunflower seeds (I begin w/ raw)
2 1/2 cups sesame seeds (I begin w/ raw)
a couple of cups of nuts (this time I used almonds)
Coat baking dishes. Put this in oven set at 350. Toast for 15 minutes, stir and toast for 15 minutes more). By now it should be turning a very light brown.
Mix liquids:
2 cups butter (melted)
2 1/2 cup brown sugar
2 cup honey
1/4 cup vanilla
Mix this until sugar is dissolved. Pour over granola and stir, stir, stir! Make sure it is evenly coated. Put back in oven, stir every 15 minutes until it looks done. Probaby an hour or so. Stir well, honey burns very easily. It will still be slightly wet, leave it to cool for a couple of hours and it will dry out like store bought granola.
If you want to add dried fruit, add after baking. We don’t add it to the mix here, but let individuals who desire it add it themselves.
Enjoy!
