Hiking with Kids

Yesterday we took advantage of our incredible spring weather and took our first family hike of the year. I took the kids hiking in January with my friend Carolynn. In the rain. Pushing Tucker in the stroller most of the way because he didn’t feel good. As soon as we got home from that hike he ran in the house and threw up. Ew.

We have been experiencing a wonderful spring in our part of the Pacific Northwest and I’m determined to take full advantage of it!pacific northwest, hiking with teens, family hike, hiking in washington

The Fab Four. No, despite our Pacific Northwest location, Tilly has not actually morphed into a  bloodthirsty teenage vampire. It’s just I was only granted one shot and they were standing in full sun. Sorry to disappoint.

I’ve become an avid reader of the Free Range Kids blog…I’d never heard of it until a few blog readers directed me there. Look at Tucker. On a big rock! That he could fall off of! I do believe childhood is being lost to too many rules, too much fear mongering and not enough freedom. And I suppose that comment came out of nowhere, but I’m sure there are those that would “worry” about a seven year old boy climbing a big rock. He was so proud of himself, though! He even said, “Mom, make sure you get the rock in the picture”. Climbing obstacles, pushing themselves, challenging themselves. This is how kids learn and grow.

And don’t ask me about his “hiking boots”…he always chooses those for hiking.

I saw this really hot guy on the trail….

On our hike yesterday I couldn’t help but reflect on our hikes on this very trail last summer. That was when we began to notice Apollo was still really struggling with his health. He had very little energy and a trip out here would wipe him out for the rest of the day.

Yesterday wasn’t much better.

Saturday night Apollo had a very rough night. Lots of nightmares and wimpering. Chuck kept him home from church because he just seemed a little off. He sat around all morning. He didn’t walk ten feet on our hike yesterday, but preferred to sit in the stroller (where he eventually fell asleep). It’s nearly impossible not worry about him…large family, family hike, washington hikes,

Five Things I’m Thankful for Today

adoption, biracial girl, transracial adoption

I had a blog post all written out and ready to go, but it sounded a bit whiney, even to me.

I decided to leave it in draft form and hop over to Happify for a bit. I did a few activities, read and commented on a few other people’s activities. Then I began cleaning up a spot in my house that is always messy…all the while thinking about the posts I’d read…and I was suddenly inspired to write about things I am thankful for today.

So here they are. Five things I am thankful for today.

1. I am thankful for that face you see in the photo above. A face that was brought to my family through divine providence, adoption and whole lot of paper work.

2. It is sunny and almost warm here. Spring truly has arrived. Birds are singing. Flowers are blooming.

3. I’m thankful for a clean kitchen. Yes, I cleaned it myself, but still. I am happy it is done.

4. I am thankful for a husband who has always supported my dream/hobby/business of photography. I am happy that I am almost finished ordering new photos for our family photo wall (8 out of 12 photos ordered).

5. I’m thankful for the friends I have “met” online. Some would argue that they are not real friends. But you know what? They are.

What are you thankful for today?

First Day of Spring!

Who cares that it is pouring down rain? Who cares that its not even 50 degrees out (and my phone tells me it’s 73 and sunny in Houston, TX)? Who cares that we are trying to warm our house with a blazing fire in the woodstove? My calendar tells me it’s spring!

I have survived another winter.

Tilly supplied us with Kool-Aid dyed eggs and Chuck provided us with Cadbury Chocolate Eggs.

Happify: The Science of Being Happy

010413_9011 blog

Can we really change our level of “happiness”? Is happiness something you can measure, chart and increase? According to current science, we can. In the last few years scientists have been able to locate the parts of the brain that cause depression and happiness. By “exercising” the parts of the brain that make us happy, we can indeed increase our happiness! And Happify has set out to do just that.

A few months ago I was asked to be a Happify Pioneer and try out the site before it went public. What is Happify? Happify is  a website dedicated to sharing the science of happiness. I was willing to give it a try. Why not? I can’t say I was expecting much to change. First of all, I didn’t particularly feel the need to “increase my happiness”  and second, I wasn’t sure playing a few games on the computer could accomplish this anyway.

In the nitty-gritty Happify is a website with games and activities designed to increase your happiness. Sounds a bit silly, doesn’t it? The games range from The Mindfulness Game where you are given a picture and need to find a certain number of hidden items, to “recording a moment” that made you happy that day, to “anticipating and savoring” an upcoming event or “finding a way to make another person smile”.

So does all this actually work? Does it increase happiness? After each activity is completed on Happify, you can click on a tab labeled “why it works” which explains the science behind how that particular activity increases personal happiness.

Science aside, what about my personal experience with Happify?

happify

Guess what? It works.  The simple act of going on the website for five to ten minutes three or four times a week has changed how I view my life and the things around me. I find myself noticing little things and savoring them even more. While on my walk/run recently I noticed myself consciously observing the blue sky and thinking to myself how very thankful I was for the mild weather that allowed me run in the dead of winter. Almost taking a mental picture of the moment. I find myself consciously anticipating upcoming events (even small ones) and savoring them while I am there. All of this leads to constantly appreciating and being satisfied with the small (and large things) around me and I find it does lead to me “feeling” happier.

As I discussed this with my children, Adalia pointed out that it makes me more thoughtful by making me stop and think about ways to make people smile. Hmmm…she was absolutely right.

In one sense, Happify is a bit like Facebook. You can follow people and like posts. But unlike Facebook, it is not filled with drama and negativity. You are not going to read about what someone had for lunch, unless, that is, they are pausing to appreciate and savor the moment.  In our Happify community we share photos and stories. On the Happify Pioneer Facebook page I was recently able to share the great news about Apollo’s swallow study. I was almost immediately surrounded my encouraging feedback. People who rejoiced with me in my moment of happiness. And you know what? It felt good.

It reminds me of years ago when I was first married. I determined not to surround myself with ladies who bad-mouthed their husbands. I could see, as a newlywed, how detrimental that could be to a marriage. Why sit around complaining about our spouses and “one-upping” each other with stories of “mistreatment”? I vowed never to do that, and I have continued that practice for seventeen years. Happify is a bit like that. No one is pretending their lives are perfect and filled with nothing but sunshine and rainbows. We are just a community of regular people who are choosing to focus on the positives in our life.

So has Happify made me a happier person? Honestly, I’d have to say, yes, it has.

Check out Happify and let me know what you think!
