Sweet little Brenna (Devon’s little sister) just turned one! I didn’t photograph Brenna’s birth, but did get to capture her newborn pictures in the hospital.

{Please excuse the slightly out-of-focus photo. Owen always insists on putting his face right up to my lens :) }

Many of you blog readers remember me asking for prayer for Devon’s brother Owen just after his birth. Owen was born at home (unplanned) and not breathing. Kara and her husband had to call 911 and do CPR on Owen as they waited for the paramedics to arrive. The doctor’s down at Children’s told Kara and Rod that Owen was brain-dead…

Owen’s parents refused to remove life-support and here he is, almost four years old. Owen had a feeding tube for over two years, but now eats 100% orally. Last fall Owen began having seizures and thus another medical roller coaster began for Owen and his family. Kara just started a blog, A Time for Every Purpose, if you’d like to keep up on Owen’s progress.050513_2774 blogOwen and Apollo. Two medically fragile boys who have a little too much in common.

Recent and upcoming happenings:

* Tilly got a tooth pulled yesterday and gets braces placed on Tuesday. As I’ve talked about in the past, I’m not a huge fan of orthodontics to make teeth “perfect” but she’s got some serious bite issues. Thanks to our tax return I was able to pay for the entire cost of her braces in one lump sum.

* Kalina’s hearing aid is ordered and we are just waiting for it to arrive. I will post more when she has it and I have photos of her wearing it.

* Judah now has over half of the money for his trip to Zambia. Unfortunately it’s supposed to all be turned in by May 15, though technically he has until he arrives at Boot Camp (first week of June). Our scrap metal drive has brought in over $1,000 and he’s earned a lot working (painting, farm work, yard work, cleaning and more).

* Adalia is looking for summer work, preferably some type of nanny/babysitting position.

* Avi and Mordecai both came home with Student of the Month certificates this week

* I have the same tech person who sped up my Little Earthling site scheduled to work on this blog on Monday, so hopefully my technical difficulties will son be a thing of the past.

Have a great weekend!

Large Family Adventures

rubber boots, children's place, dinosaur boots, monster boots, large familyThe blog has been a bit quite…because I’ve been terribly busy. Not super busy. Not really busy. But terribly busy.

It started Thursday night when I headed into our rarely used downstairs bathroom. Why is it rarely used, you ask? Good question, since it is the biggest, nicest bathroom in our house. I don’t use it because I spend 95% of my waking hours upstairs. My children don’t use it because they believe it’s haunted, or so I gather from the fact that they will run all the way upstairs and wait in line (we’re a large family, okay?) rather than use this bathroom. At any rate, I headed into bathroom to use the facilities, and was met with, what I can only describe as: what it would look like if Mt. Vesuvius erupted from our septic tank and spewed up through our toilet. And it had obviously been there for a while since the, ahem, lava was dry, so to speak.

Don’t ask me why it didn’t occur to one of my children to mention this to me. It’s not as if we normally leave dry spatters of feces around the house. I mean, my house gets messy, but I do draw the line at leaving bodily fluids where they fall…or spill or erupt. first grader, homeschooler, missing teeth, seven year old boy, large familyI was headed to bed, but decided that bathroom was at the top of my priority list for Friday morning. Friday came, I got my children on the bus, dropped Tilly off to help a new mom at our church and handed Apollo to Kalina. I put on old clothes and tackled the bathroom with scalding hot water and bleach. Once all surfaces were clean, I decided to clean out under the bathroom sink. Since this bathroom is not a favorite among our household members, we have been storing cans of paint and paint supplies under the sink. I had Judah move all of the paint supplies upstairs and decided now would be the perfect time to touch up our hallways.

Not only do I have a herd of grimly children who run their hands along the wall, but the hallway is also our Unicycle Training Ground (really) and as a result our walls are chipped and scuffed. Once I began painting  the scuffed areas, I decided, what the heck, I’d just get out the rollers and repaint the whole wall. Then I turned the corner and repainted the dining room wall…and since I had the paint and brush and roller I decided I would touch up the living room walls. It was now afternoon and I knew Tilly would be calling soon to be picked up, so I just “touched up” the spots in the living room and ran the roller in just a few really rough spots. Just as I was finishing, Tilly called, so I packed up my things and called it a day.

boy scout, whittle, large familyThe only thing is, when I came home the living room wall looked terrible. You could see every place where I had “touched up” and every roll of the roller. I didn’t understand because the hallway looked fabulous. Being the mother of fourteen means I don’t have the luxury of pondering my walls for long. Dinner needed to be made and we have the Spring Social to get ready for at the kids’ school. It wasn’t until Enoch mentioned that Judah had painted the living room walls Bone and he had painted the hallway Hopsack that I realized my error. Yes, I “touched up” our living room with a different color of paint. Entirely. So, I looks like I’ll be repainting that entire wall soon…

*sigh*

Friday night was 80′s Night at our kids school (photos soon, I promise). As soon as we got home from that I left for a celebration for a friend who was renewing her wedding vows. Saturday our older kids attended the Starlight Foundation Prom (photos soon) and Hezekiah and Tucker had their Pinewood Derby. I took one photo of the Derby and my camera battery went dead, so my iPhone had to suffice. It’s been a rough few days around here.

{Would you mind leaving me a comment about how long it takes my blog to load up? Several readers have mentioned recently how long it takes. I’ve had it scanned at a few sites and they say it’s running fast. If you can let me know what “normal” is and if it is now faster or slower, it would help me immensely. I know how annoying it is to wait and wait for a blog to load up.}
