Birth Photography and Doulas

Adalia got the call on Friday afternoon…she is now a certified doula with PALS! I am so proud of her. She has worked hard for this, beginning with her doula training at Bastyr University back in 2010  to attending births and everything in between. The very next day, Saturday,  she was doula at the birth of sweet little Jameson.

{And because there is confusion every time I mention the word “doula” on my blog, let me make it clear: a doula offers physical and emotional support to a woman during and after labor. Doulas provide no medical care or advice. Here is the definition as given by PALS.}

I too was present at Jameson’s birth as photographer. Julie is a good friend of mine and the photographer who took the beautiful photo you see at the top of my blog!

You really, really must go check out the birth of Jameson over at Little Earthling Photography. I got the most amazing shots of him being born. It is all G-rated, I assure you, but oh so cool.

Sweet Carise {Bellingham Newborn Photographer}

Sweet little Carese was under five pounds when she was born! Long and lean like the rest of her family.

I love her intent look as she gazes up at her mama.

Carese is number 12 in this family…there is no lack of loving arms to hold her in this house!

Welcome, Brenna! {Bellingham Newborn Photographer}

Yesterday afternoon I got to go meet my dears friends’ sweet little baby, Brenna.

I could barely put her down long enough to take pictures. She was just so sweet and snuggly!

Many more photos to follow, I promise. But for now, I have my own sweet little ones to tend.

Six Months {Bellingham Baby Photographer}

Half a year has gone by since this little man joined our family. He entered this world with a blast of action and noise that hasn't  stopped since. His first half a year has brought us: a cord prolapse, ambulance ride, emergency c-section, frenulum clipping, hernia and two rounds of antibiotics. Plus, very little sleep and immeasurable joy.

He is weighing in at 14 pounds, exactly what he weighed at four months….I'll be talking to his doctor about it and very likely taking him to our midwife (who's also a naturopathic doctor). I've read plenty on the internet about babies not gaining weight. He nurses plenty (believe me :) . Most things I read actually suggest not adding in solids for a baby who's not gaining weight…the foods he'd be eating at this age have fewer fat and calories than breastmilk. And if you know Apollo, you are aware that he very, very active. Clearly not a lethargic baby that is wasting away, but more like a wild-man who burns too many calories.

Apollo is now napping very well most days. Nights are, well, a challenge still. Because of his lack of weight gain, I nurse him every time he wakes up…some nights its two or three times. Other nights five or six.

But who could resist those beautiful brown eyes? Not this mama.

Apollo can sit up pretty well, but will still lose his balance and fall down eventually. He gets up on his hands and knees. He inch worms forward. He has learned how to bang things. He has begun vocalizing again and is blowing raspberries.

Apollo has no teeth and has not started solids yet. On a whim last week I put some avocado in his mouth and he acted like I was killing him. Christmas day Adalia gave him some squash which he sucked off her finger with interest…then puked up two minutes later (he doesn't spit up so this is unusual).

He didn't really eat this Snickers bar, though it may be just the thing to help him put on weight.

Today I bring to you Old Photos of My Children. Because they're just so darn cute. Some of you might actually recognize some of these little faces if you've been around this blog since the beginning.

I have two more births lined up to photograph this month and I am so excited. One is a  hospital birth and the other a homebirth. I've had five homebirths myself, but this will a first for me to photograph and I can't wait! The family is all ready and the two older sisters will be present. I photographed the youngest girl as a newborn and can't wait to meet her little brother or sister.

And speaking of births, the mom of the very first newborn I ever photographed is due agian in January. This will her third baby that I take newborn photos of! I always feel so honored when families invite me to photograph their births and their babies.

And what better time to celebrate new babies than the season when we celebrate the birth of Christ! I hope you're having a wonderful weekend.
