Thank you, IHOP, for sponsoring this Father’s Day post.

We love to celebrate in our family and with 14 kids, weddings, births and graduation there is always something to celebrate! Our favorite spot have a celebration meal? IHOP. We love it, the kids love it and my parents love it so it was the natural choice for our recent Father’s Day breakfast. So, come join us while we celebrate our fathers…and read about the eight things you should never say to your dad on Father’s Day!

8 things never to say to your dad on Father's Day...

Father’s Day. Some love it, some hate it. A day set aside just to celebrate our dads (for those of us lucky enough to have them). No matter what your feelings about Father’s Day are, I think we can all agree that there are some things you should never say to your dad on Father’s Day.

8 things never to say to your dad on Father's Day...

1. Remember that time…

According to family legend, one day my grandma was out driving her husband’s car with her son (my dad) when she crashed it leaving a small dent. She told my dad not to mention it to his father. That night at dinner my dad said, “Hey Dad, one time mom crashed your car! And it was today!”

Oops.

2. I’m sorry I dropped your toothbrush in the toilet.

What you don’t know can’t hurt you…so it’s probably best just to not mention this one at all. Better yet, play it safe and buy your dad a new toothbrush. And by the way, this is why I don’t keep my toothbrush in the bathroom.

3. Dad, do you ever feel like King David? Because I sure feel like Absalom.

4. Dad, I just swallowed a dime.

Yes, Tilly said this to her father…as we sat in church on our very first Sunday after Hezekiah was born.

{Confession: this incident took place on Mother’s Day…but trust me, it didn’t make it any more pleasant}

5. I love you. But not in public.

The “I love you” part was cute, but you probably should stop right there. Let your dad hug you if he wants. A little PDA never killed anyone.

6. You’re a better dad than Darth Vader.

No matter how much your dad loves Star Wars…this is not the right thing to say. Especially on Father’s Day.

7. You’ve always been there for me. Except for that time you forgot me at track practice because you were busy buying a broken down truck off of Craigslist.

Father’s Day is probably not the best time to bring this one up. And he really does love you.

8. Thanks for paying for this awesome Father’s Day breakfast at  IHOP!

Take you dad to breakfast…but please, don’t ask him to pay.

Instead, let him chow down on a massive Cheeseburger Omelette and Buttermilk Pancakes with blueberries. After all, Father’s  Day only comes once a year.

What are your favorite Father’s Day memories? Do you have any special plans for the day?

Wow you where up and about early! It’s only 9 here on the east coast. I always love hearing your take on things. Have a great day,

    • We actually went and celebrated yesterday! I knew IHOP would be crazy-busy today and it would have been way too hard to try to fit in before or after church.

  2. Hilarious. We did the German thing: coffee and cake on the patio (and “cake” means fresh fruit held together by not-too-sweet gelatin on a bed of compressed crumbs with whipped cream. No goopy frostinged things. My husband got his favorite things: Bavarian wursts and bath salts.

  3. Newish reader, enjoying your blog a lot!

My favourite Father’s Day misquote was when Olympics fever was spreading through our house last year, and my 7-year-old piped up over Father’s Day breakfast: “Daddy, you’re my silver medal! You didn’t win, but you’re on the podium.”

    Nice.

    • Thanks for stopping by to say hello! I love your child’s comment 🙂

  4. Our first child was born on Father’s Day…and our one and a half year anniversary. And that same child once said to me, “You’re the best mom in the world!…Maybe not the best mom, but you’re a pretty good mom…” He also recently said, “Mom, you’re really special. Dad is special, too. Maybe Dad is specialer, because he’s bigger.”
