Homeschool Life: How to Hand Dye Yarn

posted in: Homeschooling | 0

My friend Kara messaged me recently to let me know she was going to hand dye yarn with her kids as a homeschool project. She wanted to know if Kalina would be interested in joining them. Kalina was but had to work that day. I asked Kara if I could come watch anyway. She, of course, said yes, and I, of course, brought along my camera.

I don’t know a lot about how to hand dye yarn but I will share the links here with you in case you’d like to try this yourself. Watching my friend hand dye yarn.

Step one was to soak the undyed yarn (in this case, Cascade 220 – affiliate link -) in water to get it wet.

Kara had a variety of natural dyes on-hand all ordered from Dharma Trading Co (she has raved about them for years).  I know she was using indigo and madder. Dharma Trading also has a great variety in dye for Tie-Dying (I posted a tutorial here) though I buy my dyes from Amazon Prime for the free shipping.

This yarn was dyed with madder. Madder dye comes from the root of the madder plant.

Watching this process got me thinking about dye and color. We can buy clothing, blankets, towels in pretty much any color we want. I have given very little thought to the hows behind it. So crazy to think about a time in history when everything would have to be hand dyed…and be a privilege that not everyone had.

Having her hands full doesn’t stop Kara from enjoying the process.

I can’t wait to see what Kara knits up with these…and I’m definitely tempted to try this myself…maybe this summer…
