Cranberry Scone Recipe

{Originally posted in December 2015. This is one of my favorite recipes and with the weather turning cooler, I thought it was time to share again!}

Growing up my grandma loved cranberries so much she would buy bag after bag in the fall so she could freeze them and enjoy them all year long. She didn’t make any fancy recipes, she just cooked them up until the cranberries burst out of their skin, then she added sugar and continued cooking until she had a thick cranberry sauce. I don’t think I will ever eat a cranberry without thinking about her.

I love things like that. The tradition, the family stories. So, I of course, feed my own children plenty of cranberries and hopefully happy memories.

My favorite way to eat cranberries is cooked up just like my grandma used to do…but my next favorite way? In scones. I created this recipe for Cranberry Scones years ago when I was trying to make the perfect scone and I’m pretty sure I accomplished it right here.

We love dipping our cranberry scones in this Cranberry Fluff! Simply add cooked cranberries (follow the directions on the package) to marshmallow creme. Stir until you have a cloud of pink cranberry heaven. This is so good, my friends! 

I think we all have events this time of year where we have to transport food. I like to use this lightweight Rubbermaid Party Platter. It has a compartment for dip with a separate leak-proof lid  and four compartments for food. This is perfect for taking my scones to holiday gatherings or using at home.

Cranberry Scone Recipe

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 20 minutes

Yield: 32 cones

Cranberry Scone Recipe


  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 Tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 stick butter (1/2 cup)
  • 1 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tsp vanilla


  1. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Cut in butter until the chunks are the size of peas.
  3. Add dried cranberries
  4. In separate bowl, combine wet ingredients.
  5. Mix gently.
  6. Divide into four parts.
  7. Take one part and pat it into a circle onto a pan.
  8. Cut into wedges.
  9. Combine 1 egg with 1 Tsp. water and coat the top of the scone.
  10. Repeat with other three parts.
  11. Bake at 425 for 10-12 minutes.

    The biggest difference has been my children getting older. Obviously the cute mischief they got into as toddlers has changed. They don’t want their mistakes publicized. My youngest children are 5 and 10 years old. They care about what I write on the blog. I have no doubt that if I had a few toddlers running around my posts would be the ones you refer to.

    When we have some major event I have to consider how it will affect the other family members if I write about it. A 2 year old doesn’t care if you write bout the time they pooped on the couch during story time. Those same mistakes by a 10 year old? They care…In 10 years? I will probably write a book about all of this, but now isn’t the time.

    Having said that, I appreciate your comment and will try to find that voice again. As soon as I can catch my breath!

    • Just another perspective… Jessica’s heartfelt observations are basically on target, and we enjoyed that season of your family’s life. BUT life also changes. Many who are in similar circumstances as you are (adoption, special needs, etc) do understand why you can’t and, rightly, don’t share all. Some of your tiny comments let us know that there is quite a story behind them, but you obviously can’t/shouldn’t share all. You are doing what is right for your family during this season.

        Thank you so much for these words! There are so many things I can’t say and can’t write. My job is to love, train and protect my children and part of that is keeping some of their difficulties private. Interestingly, my food posts seem less well received here when I take beautiful photos! One of my goals for 2015 was to improve my food photography and I am so very proud of these photos but sometimes people don’t seem to realize this is the same recipe we have been using for years (and that I posted about here: ) just with nicer photos! It makes me wonder if the nicer photos somehow seem less “homey” to people…

  5. Yum! I can’t wait to try this! I love cranberries. I also love your site. My parents wanted 12 children and were only able to have two almost 12 years apart. We had two also and weren’t able to have more. What a blessing to have a large family.

  7. It calls for one egg, when you say add all wet ingredients does that include the egg? or is the egg to use when you coat the top of the scones…..thank you

      Sorry for the confusion, I will edit the recipe. The egg is used to coat the scones, not to be put in with the wet ingredients.
