A little ingenuity, plenty of Pop Secret flavors to choose from and a little help from my parents, and we managed to surprise the kids with the perfect Pajama Ride! The first pajama ride we’ve had in a few years!

What in the world is a Pajama Ride?

A pajama ride is a quick ticket to Best Mom Ever. It is when you put your kids to bed, wait about five minutes, and then run into their room, flick on their light and yell, “PAJAMA RIDE!” The kids then get out of bed (pajamas and all) and load up in the car (or in our case, 15 passenger van). The off you go on an unknown adventure (or just for cheap ice cream cones).  This a fun tradition we started years ago, that has become much more complicated over the years. To begin with, when we first did it…we simply put the kids to bed early, and they had no idea. We were back home and they were back in bed by 8 pm! Brilliant, right?

Now that our kids are older, can tell time, have staggered bedtimes, and in the case of my teens, often stay up later than I do, its become complicated. Despite all of this, our younger kids have heard tales (and have vague memories) of Pajama Rides in the past. I have finally come up with a way to do pajama rides now that our kids are older.

A few weeks ago, we had dinner, tidied up and then I sent my kids outside to clean up the yard. They were a bit…sad…having to clean up the yard after dinner, but hey, that’s part of life, right? I waited until all the kids were working (some are slower than others) then yelled, “Pajama Ride!” This time there was no hesitation. The kids raced in the house, donned cozy pajamas, grabbed their favorite doll or stuffed animal and headed out to the van.

Instead of ice cream, I had a different surprise waiting for them.

The day before I had gone to Walmart and bought snacks and headed to my parents house. I set up the table with a few snacks and decorations. On the night of the Pajama  Ride, we drove straight to Grandma and Grandpa’s house. My mom had cooked up a couple of frozen pizzas and popped a ton of Pop Secret popcorn for us to snack on. My favorite out of the  Pop Secret flavors was the Kettle Corn, but the kids also enjoyed Sweet ‘n Crunchy and Movie Theater Butter.

The big event of the night was to watch a couple episodes of Big Crazy Family Adventure. Have you heard of this show? The Kirkby family take their two sons (ages 6 and 3) from British Columbia to India…without taking a single plane! Kayak, bus, train, ship, you name it, they take anything and everything except an airplane! The kids loved it.

We had such a great time. Its been a few weeks and the kids are still talking about it. I am so happy to have figured out a way to still keep up this tradition and to include my big kids. You might notice Tilly isn’t in her pajamas…That’s because she went straight from our pajama ride to babysitting!

  1. What I noticed more is that Jubilee looks just like Adalia o.o I mean, not that that’s a bad thing by any means, just a little odd to have identical twins so far apart in age… 😛

I know! Now that Adalia has moved away, everyone says Jubilee looks just like me 🙂

  2. We have 3 under 4, and 6 total. Sometimes we do a pajama walk. They all get pjs on, and we take a short walk through the neighbourhood. Then they go to bed. The kids love it, but since a pajama ride includes snacks, I’m sure they’d love that even more.

Yes! And put them to bed first so you can surprise them! At your children’s ages, you can put them to bed early like we used to.

  3. I love your family stories, but oh, am I ever sick of product placement. Personally. Also, you do have a number of readers like me who–even if I wanted to buy these products, and usually I don’t–could not easily do so without unusual expense: I do order a few American products from Amazon occasionally, but since I live in Germany, that can be expensive.
I just liked all the recipes, common sense, and stories. But that’s me!

Melpub, I know you are a long time reader, and I value your input. The pajama ride was happening whether this post was sponsored or not. We do love Pop Secret, but have to go enjoy at grandma’s (no microwave here). I only do sponsored posts for products and use and enjoy (coming soon, a LEGO post! <--- can't have too many of those).

  4. What fun! We do mystery trips at our house… something my parents did with us. You never know when one will happen and they have no idea where we are going!

That’s awesome! Some of my special needs kids can’t handle that kind of suspense, though 🙁

  5. […] 3. Catching all of my kids off guard and pulling off a family Pajama Ride! […]

  6. clever! my kids think doing anything in jammies makes it more special. hey, even going for a ride in the car with no shoes on is living on the edge sometimes.

  7. What a fun family time! My little ones would love something like this.
