Today is Apollo’s fifth birthday. Almost six years ago Chuck and I thought it would be “fun” to have just one more baby. Apollo was born June 26th, 2010 in a birth so scary and traumatic it was featured on Discovery Life’s Outrageous Births. After 18 months of unexplained sickness, crying and lack of sleep, he was diagnosed with a rare congenital heart defect that every doctor he had ever seen missed. If you’re new, read Apollo’s story.

Apollo’s five years of life have been filled with tears and pain and doctors and hope and prayers.

Today, Apollo is the healthiest he’s ever been. He still has his g-tube, but that too may be making a slow exit. His breathing is pretty darn close to normal and his eating is coming along nicely. He is slowly coming out of the protective shell he has built around himself. He definitely suffers from anxiety due to all of his early medical procedures, but he is making good progress. He still doesn’t sleep through the night…something I’m glad I didn’t know five years ago. Had I know, during my hours of walking the floors with him that at five he still wouldn’t be sleeping all night…I don’t think I would have survived.Apollo-dirt-2893 copy

Apollo’s life has been difficult for him and every other member of our family. I am a different person then I was before he was born five years ago. His life and health issues have changed me in a way that can never be undone. Some of those changes are for the better, and some, probably not. Despite the struggles, the fear, the stress, I often find myself looking at these big brown eyes and thinking about how much I would have missed by not having him. Apollo? He is so central to our family, our life, I can’t fathom a world without him.

Happy birthday Apollo! You are loved and adored by thousands of people.

{I intended to make a new slideshow showing his 5th year, but never quite got around to it, so here is last year’s birthday video! }
