A Large Family, Homeschooling and Balance

I’ve been struggling lately to find balance. Balance between laundry, a semi-clean house, homeschooling and meals. Getting back to school this year has been a challenge. Many homeschooling moms can relate, I’m sure, to the sometimes difficult adjustment of suddenly adding in homeschooling to our already busy days.

So far this school year, I have had an appointment or two for Apollo each week…sometimes these appointments are local, but often they are 100 miles away.

Adalia (17) and Judah (16) are both attending the community college this year. Tilly (15) is still in Columbia with her grandparents. That leaves Enoch (13) as my oldest child at home during the day right now. Kalina (12) is struggling academically due to her hearing loss. Jubilee is thriving doing a mix of fifth and sixth grade. Hezekiah is still quite and studious as ever…Tucker is always busy, wanting more, more, more school work and projects.

There never seems to be quite enough time.

Recently I saw an online discussion about large families. Someone, of course, commented on how in large families the older kids end up “raising” and “caring for” the younger ones. I had to chuckle at that (as did my teens). While I am sure that happens in some families, my teens are far too busy with school, work and church to be taking on the burden of their younger siblings!large family, large family blog, homeschooling, homeschool blog, adoption, adoption blog, photography, little earthling photography, bellingham photographer

So, I am working on focusing on the small things. Yesterday we attended an impromptu celebration for a friend’s birthday. Then headed to the library (always a favorite).

This morning, first thing, I read the entire stack of new library books to Apollo…and was soon joined on the couch by Tucker. I don’t need to leave the house at all today. Dinner is planned. Enoch is making fresh muffins for breakfast.

Today is going to be a good day.

{Be sure to check in tomorrow, I will be annoucing my giveaway that includes a LeapPad 2 from LeapFrog!}

    Sounds a bit like my day. I had several away-from-home things I wanted to do today, including library, YMCA to sign up for swim lessons, and a walk. I decided to take the kids out and do them this morning, rather than do them after school. One thing led to another, and we had a fun day of outdoor adventures, but never did do school. So I guess we did a field trip instead!
