Oldies But Goodies

Check out these photos I found on my hard drive yesterday. These bring back such fun memories. I clearly knew nothing about photography, but I love these nonetheless. These were taken on my first digital camera, a little Kodak EasyShare.

Enjoy!

Avi, 11 months old

Oh my. Just look at that face! Avi didn't get her first tooth until her first birthday. But look, even back then she had those sparkly eyes and beautiful smile…

Tucker, at 8 or 9 months

Look at those baby curls. Curls I was sure would be gone with his first haircut (but they're not). Those dark, dark eyes. And a mouth full of teeth- months before Avi.

Mordecai and Jubilee (3)

Oh my. Look at that smile. The love between these two. The matching babies in Snap-Ez diapers. I love everything about this photo…In fact, it makes me think I need to print a bunch of these in 5×7's and start a new "vintage" photo wall in my house. With photos just like these. Snapshots that capture our life, our love, our family.

I often find that these photos mean more to me after a few years…when the children are older and so much has changed….what type of photos do you love from your family albums?

  1. I’m working on our photo albums…at least I’ve gotten ready to…I love history, especially our history..especially photos of the kids just goofing off…anything really, but best if it’s of the people I love! I really want to find out your trick for cheap/easy mounting (read Jennifer J’s blog) as I’d love to decorate my home with memories of our family!

  2. I like pictures of me with my brother when we were really little. I don’t remember it, but it’s fun to look at. =) I like candid photos much more than staged ones you take at portrait studios. We have a bunch of those and I hate ‘em.

  3. When I was a kid, I wanted a black baby doll because I thought the dolls skin was so pretty. Did Mordecai notice at a young age that he was darker than the other kids and want a black doll? Is it politically correct to say black or African American right now? Sorry if I am being offensive, I honestly do not know… my best friends growing up were black and they called themselves black. The pictures are adorable!

  4. I wish we had such nice pictures. Newell was so photogenic, but Olivia has never been still enough for our very slow digital. Who knows, maybe we might just know someone who has a passion for photography who could take current pics of the kids?!?!?!?!

  5. I was just looking back myself in my photos and realizing how much more I appreciate every little photo long after it is taken. Sometimes I delete a photo if it is blurry or whatever, but if I leave it a year later I love it in all it’s imperfection.
My fav photos are of my kids little naked booties!… or their toes and fingers… and I love how sweet and baby-like there faces look at two and three when they are currently 6 and 9.

  6. I love candid photos from the past. Just seeing family or friends doing the things they do. My parents are currently digitizing a bunch of old Super8 film my grandfather took for years. I have seen a tiny bit. It’s so funny to see myself at 2 or 3 and my brother (who had an illness paralyzing him for 6 months) learning to walk again. I was horrified to see myself “loving” a cat by the tail!! Poor thing.

  7. No, he did not notice at a young age, but once again, the delays he has are hard to explain. You could spend hours/days/weeks with him and not necessarily notice his delays. This makes denial a very easy thing when you are his mother :) Mordecai was 4 1/2 before he could differentiate between a boy and a girl…and 7 before he could use the pronouns he and she appropriately. He did not notice skin color until he was five or six.
The doll he is holding we bought for Enoch when Mordecai joined our family. Enoch was 2 1/2 and obsessed w/ taking care of the baby. We had plenty of brown/black dolls in the house, but they belonged to the girls, so we bought this one just for Enoch. He loved it for several years, then passed it on to Mordecai.
We generally use the term black. Our black friends use that
term to describe themselves, though I know plenty of African-Americans prefer that term as well. Perhaps it is the area we live in. It gets complicated in our house because Keziah, Ezra and Boaz are no African American…they are African. As Ive mentioned before, Chucks cousin is married to a black man who is Canadian and from Trinidad…so the term African American becomes completely inaccurate in that case. To be technical he is Trinidadian Canadian…and would not find it complimentary to be called African American. It is a very complicated issue.I prefer to call people by whatever term they prefer.
